It’s been really difficult to put my thoughts into words these past few days. I’m saddened to see that we treat each other with such hatred. It’s hard to watch people have such a blatant disregard for each other. We are terrible to children, to the poor, to people that don’t hold the same opinions as we do, to people of color, to women, to people who live lifestyles that are different from our own, to old people… everyone to each other. It’s mind blowing how little respect we have for each other and for our world.
This year’s Memorial Day was filled with the images of the three American men who were murdered by two separate white supremacist terrorists. Two of those men were in the armed forces. Their names’ were Richard Collins III, Ricky Best, and Taliesin Namkai-Meche.
I find myself wanting to blame a certain President of the United States for all of it. It’s so easy to blame him for everything, even though he’s just one small part of the problem. While I do think that certain hate groups of people have become more emboldened to act out their hatred, I don’t believe it’s the fault of one single occurrence; such as the 2016 elections. It’s been really bad in this country for a very, very long time. We have spent decades ignoring our collective hatred towards each other, and I think the current administration and GOP’s disregard for others was the final push these groups of people needed. We have become a greed driven, racist, homophobic, misogynistic, and xenophobic nation of people who can’t see that life is precious. We freak out whenever someone is different from ourselves, and we don’t hold each other accountable for being horrible to each other. Is anyone really surprised?
Right. What does this have to do with crocheting?
I’m not completely sure yet. The past few weeks especially, have hurt my heart to the point of creative paralysis. I crochet. It’s what I do. Whatever I end up figuring out, it’ll revolve around crocheting for change somehow. I want to make some crochet art pieces and more crochet patterns for charity. I have my Uterus Doll Crochet Pattern for now. You can purchase it on Ravelry, and read about how all proceeds go to Planned Parenthood.
Our country wouldn’t be so incredibly gross if we were kinder to each other… especially to those who are different from ourselves.
